The Affordable Getaway: Romantic Weekends on a Budget

By Karolyn Castaldo on July 30, 2012

You may not be able to whisk your honey away for some alone time for a week or two, but have you ever thought of getting away for just one or two nights? In college you aren’t making the kind of money you need for an expensive vacation and you definitely aren’t getting the kind of romance or alone time that you want or need for a fun and exciting relationship. Spice things up and treat him or her to a weekend you’ll never forget. Here are some tips.

Hygiene and Safety Have a Price

Do not cheap out on the hotel just to save a few dollars. You will not impress anyone with a dumpy room in a shady part of town. The extra money it costs to stay in a nicer place is worth the time and money it takes to save it. Trust me when I say that you do not want to risk the run-down motel with half the letters missing from the sign just because it doesn’t take such a hit to your bank account.

Choose a Non-Touristy Spot

While it’s definitely more fun to be able to do a beach vacation in the summer or a trip to the mountains in the winter, you probably won’t be able to do that on a budget. If you pick a spot that doesn’t have a ton going on, but only requires a short drive an activity or fun destination, you will be less likely to break the bank on the hotel room alone.

Split the Cost

Think you might go broke on your own? Ask your sweetie if you could divvy up the price between the two of you so that you can both enjoy the weekend. Hopefully, he or she will understand that splitting it will make it a much more affordable adventure and bonding experience for the both of you.

Pick One or Two Big Activities

If you decide to really splurge on the hotel, it might be in your best interest to just pick one or two activities in the area to do. If you are foodies, choose one activity to be a big expensive dinner and then something else that is unique to the area you are staying in. If you are not splurging on the hotel, you have the room financially to do more with your trip.

Make Sure You’re Ready

A weekend vacation is a lot of time alone. At college, you have roommates and friends popping in and out constantly of your everyday interactions. You need to be ready to spend the time with just the two of you before you spend the money on the trip. It could end disastrously if you aren’t careful about your timing, but it could also be one of the most memorable times you spend with your significant other.

Weekend getaways can be affordable, fun and so worth it, if planned well and for the right person. If you take these tips to heart, you really can’t go wrong. Romance is important in a relationship and without some alone time every once in a while, you might let the flame flicker out all together. Take a chance and plan a romantic weekend.
